Ceph Community: Google Summer of Code 2026 Intern Showcase

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is Google's global mentorship program that helps new contributors gain real-world experience in open source software.

This summer, Ceph mentees took on ambitious projects that improved subcomponents like RGW and the Ceph Dashboard, while sharpening their skills in Python, C++, Angular, and documentation tooling. Their work strengthens Ceph for the entire community.

Project Name: radosgw admin UX and Documentation Improvements ¶

Mentor(s): Yuval Lifshitz, JacquesH

Mentee(s): Rotem Shapira

Description: Replaces hand-written radosgw-admin documentation with a programmatic pipeline that uses CLI11 as the single source of truth. The --help output, man page, and admin guide are all auto-generated from the C++ command definitions, keeping documentation in sync with the code instead of drifting from it.

Project Name: Kafka Security Project ¶

Mentee(s): Sujay Dongre

Description: Addresses a major security gap in Ceph RGW's Kafka bucket notifications. Existing support falls short for modern secure Kafka deployments — particularly GSSAPI (Kerberos), OAUTHBEARER (JWT), mTLS client authentication, and fileless CA/certificate handling.

The project extends RGW's Kafka connection path to resolve security inputs with clear precedence, map them correctly to librdkafka, and ensure safe producer identity reuse — backed by deterministic local tests automated in teuthology.

Project Name: Ceph Dashboard Carbonization and UX Consistency Improvements ¶

Mentee(s): Syed Ali Ul Hasan

Description: Completes the Ceph Dashboard's migration from Bootstrap to the Carbon Design System and brings a consistent user experience across all components. The dashboard currently sits in a hybrid state with mixed UI frameworks, creating inconsistency and added maintenance overhead.

The project refactors legacy UI components to Carbon, standardizes the frontend architecture around the lazy-loaded RoutedModule pattern, and replaces modal-based workflows with dedicated routed pages for better scalability and performance. It also repairs broken unit and end-to-end tests and expands coverage for critical modules, backed by reliable CI validation.

Key deliverables: a fully carbonized and consistent UI, improved performance through modular routing and lazy loading, and a robust unit and e2e test suite covering previously untested areas — reducing technical debt and making the codebase easier to maintain and contribute to.
